Tyler Biehler

project manager

Born in Colorado, raised in Minnesota, Tyler has made a full circle since graduating from the University of Minnesota with a double major in Architecture & Fine Arts. After graduation, he ventured back to Colorado where he gained invaluable experience as an independent contractor, honing his skills in construction methods through hands-on work on a wide variety of projects.

Tyler’s contractor work provided him with a unique perspective that inspired him to delve deeper into the world of architecture.  Landing an entry-level draftsman job at a small healthcare architecture firm in Denver and working his way up to Senior Project Manager.

Tyler joined Santulan Architecture so he can focus on employing his design and detailing abilities to benefit large-scale residential projects, something he’s strived for since his college years.  When he’s not working, Tyler can be found relaxing with his wife and cat, Pip, at his cabin near Estes Park.

What sparked your interest in Architecture?

Like many of my colleagues at Santulan, I too have been heavily influenced by Legos in shaping my career path.  As a child, I spent countless hours immersed in building Legos, creating my own imaginative designs ranging from cars and buildings to entire Lego landscapes.  Even as an adult, my passion for Legos has not diminished, and I still indulge in purchasing new sets from time to time.  I often must remind my wife that Legos are a business expense.

What is the most important life/career advice you have ever received?

During my time in college, a professor once shared a valuable piece of advice with me. He said, “Always reflect on your past work and acknowledge your progress. Look back to where you started and see how far you’ve come.” This simple yet profound concept has stayed with me ever since. I firmly believe that it’s crucial for everyone to take the time to reflect on their achievements and recognize their personal growth. These moments of self-reflection serve as a powerful reminder of one’s identity, purpose, and potential.

What are your hobbies?

When time allows, I like to paint. While architecture offers ample opportunities for creative expression in design, painting allows me the freedom to fully explore and convey my personal perspective on the world. I love to create elaborate social scenes that blend real-life situations with entirely fictional storylines. This unique combination of elements results in intricate and thought-provoking pieces that reflect my artistic take on the world.

Who is your favorite architect? Why?

While it may seem like a cliche, it’s difficult for me to talk about my architectural influences without mentioning Frank Lloyd Wright. However, beyond his iconic work, I also find inspiration in the innovative designs of Shigeru Ban. As a Japanese architect known for his minimalist and sustainable approach, Ban’s projects such as the ‘2/5 House’ and ‘Curtain Wall House’ have left a lasting impact on me. What I admire most about Ban’s work is his skill in seamlessly integrating the exterior and interior spaces, while also incorporating the natural surroundings into the design. This approach to architecture, where the built environment is in harmony with nature, is something that truly resonates with me.
